... I much prefer a linear file. So I use info to learn
new things and man to solve quick problems.

Because you can jump around in the whole file. I confess sometimes I
ran less on the info files as well, to skip the tree structure.
Try M-s (Info-search); it searches for a REGEXP. I use it all the
time as a major navigation tool. I would be curious what you think of
it.
Maybe this need (having all of the information at once when using it
as a reference) is a peculiarity of mine, but maybe it's something
other people need as well.
Try going through a complete Info document by pressing the space bar
-- it takes you through the same path as pressing the space bar in
less, but with less extraneous junk. Plus, you get a nice regexp
search tool, M-s.
