Hello,

I met some problems with accented characters in table of contents
for French.

I send you the test files test01.texi and test02.texi, and the
corresponding dvi files that I obtain. They have been compiled with
plain format adapted to use 8bits dm fonts. TeXinfo version is 1999-
09-25.10.

When I use original texinfo.tex (file test01.tex), and 8 bits accented
characters in sectioning commands, they appear in table of
contents as ^^xy (cf. page 5 and 6 of test01.dvi)

When I use modified texinfo1.tex obtained by uncommenting line

%\catcode`\^=7 % to see ^^e4 as \"a etc.

then the situation improves (cf. test02.dvi) as
accented characters appear now correctly in the
table of contents.

Moreover, the math formula @math{x^2} appears
correctly in table of contents when using
texinfo1.tex, while it does not appear correctly
when using the original texinfo.tex (it appears
unmodified).

Therefore, I do not understand why the line
"\catcode`\^=7" is commented, with the
explanation:

% We can't do this, because then an actual ^ in a
section
% title fails, e.g., @chapter ^ --
exponentiation. --karl, 9jul97

Could you explain to me why this line has been commented ?
Thanks a lot.

Best wishes,
Michel
