The LilyPond installation installs PNGs in
    [/usr]/share/lilypond/<version>/doc/<..> somewhere, and both HTML and
    INFO can easily refer to them.

I don't see how info will find them there.  The info files are generated
at distribution time, but the prefix isn't known then.

5mb is pretty trivial :).

I don't know string->symbol, but if it just makes a symbol from a
string, isn't that make-symbol?  You probably mean something else.

    Emacs must have code that handles escaping in strings?

One would assume so, but I don't know what it is, and don't see it in a
quick glance through the Elisp manual.  It must be there, though.  Maybe
Bob or someone else on this list can help.
