when you install a new version, it doesn't mean the previous one is removed.
At least when you do "./configure; make; make install".
I guess that OSX has it's own packaging system and that the 4.6 came
with the system. So you should use your, OSX-specific tools to remove
texinfo 4.6. Perhaps you could also find a way to install 4.8 under the
packaging system, so that it knows which files belong to it.
This may come handy with later upgrades.
But since the packaging system is OSX specific, you have to ask on an
OSX list for help.
