I've attached a patch to the 2005-10-10.17 version of texinfo.tex to
generalize and clean up fonts a bit.
Wow. Thank you very much for this work.
This scheme loads all fonts relative to a 10pt "base" font for each
shape, so purists may be offended that it will load cmr10 at 12pt
rather than cmr12.
Not so much a matter of offense, but since one of TeX's main strengths
compared to other systems is its ability to use optically scaled fonts,
I am reluctant to give it up.
Also, it's not just a matter of purity. cmr10 at 12pt has different
metrics than cmr12. So this would potentially cause different line
breaks. Many manuals have been tuned for this ...
Can you possibly extend your scheme to support cmr12 and its ilk?
