time a format is encountered
That would solve the nesting, potentially, but how does the indentation
come out right?

@noindent
should be at level of examples, still indented from display.
@example
e2
@end example
@end display
Anyway, I'm not sure what can practically be done, but I'll try to think
about it at some point.
