    With 4.11 PLUS your patch from the above it is still happening, 

Ah, the case before had a @dircategory.  I didn't try without.
(I surmise that's the difference, anyway.)

    -      insert_string ("START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY\n");
    +      add_word ("START-INFO-DIR-ENTRY\n");

I installed it.  Thanks very much.
