Ok, I tried a similar thing, no \tracingonline, but I just cat the log file after running each of the engine with output to /dev/null. And, the answer is that there is no \openout trace in the log with any of the MikTeX engines. See below: bash-3.1$ cat openout.tex \newwrite \ourwrite \immediate\openout \ourwrite dum.dum \bye bash-3.1$ for p in e pdf xe lua; do echo '====================';$p''tex openout.tex >/dev/null; cat openout.log; done ==================== This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (MiKTeX 2.9 64-bit) (preloaded format=etex 2014.11.24) 22 AUG 2015 14:28 entering extended mode **openout.tex (c:\Nos_Programmes\msys\local\projects\metafont-for-beginners\openout.tex \ourwrite=\write0 ) No pages of output. ==================== This is pdfTeX, Version 3.1415926-2.5-1.40.14 (MiKTeX 2.9 64-bit) (preloaded format=pdftex 2014.11.24) 22 AUG 2015 14:28 entering extended mode **openout.tex (c:\Nos_Programmes\msys\local\projects\metafont-for-beginners\openout.tex \ourwrite=\write0 ) No pages of output.
