I am unable to successfully run "install-info --debug tar.info dir". The output I get is as follows:
debug: reading dir file dir debug: reading input file tar.info Abort trap: 6 and the "dir" file is not properly updated. Further details: Version info for install-info: install-info (GNU texinfo) 6.0 While investigating. I downloaded "tar-1.28.tar.bz2" from "http://gnu.mirror.vexxhost.com/tar/". I extracted files from it via "gtar -jxvf tar-1.28.tar.bz2" version info for gtar: gtar --version tar (GNU tar) 1.28 I am using a MacBook Air 13 running the latest version of Mac OS X Yosemite Unix command "uname -a" gives: Darwin Alans-Air.lan 14.5.0 Darwin Kernel Version 14.5.0: Tue Sep 1 21:23:09 PDT 2015; root:xnu-2782.50.1~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64 The "dir" file that results is: --------------------- separator line ---------------------------- This is the file .../info/dir, which contains the topmost node of the Info hierarchy, called (dir)Top. The first time you invoke Info you start off looking at this node. File: dir, Node: Top This is the top of the INFO tree This (the Directory node) gives a menu of major topics. Typing "q" exits, "?" lists all Info commands, "d" returns here, "h" gives a primer for first-timers, "mEmacs<Return>" visits the Emacs manual, etc. In Emacs, you can click mouse button 2 on a menu item or cross reference to select it. * Menu: --------------------- separator line ---------------------------- The lines * Tar: (tar). Making tape (or disk) archives. and * tar: (tar)tar invocation. Invoking GNU `tar'. are not present in the "dir" file. I do not have this problem with other info files and using "install-info" with them. This report is distilled from a number of tests that I made; I don't attempt to describe them all. -- Alan Wehmann [email protected]
