The output from yes|fmt is jagged. Some lines are one letter shorter than they should be. This is fmt 2.0.10 from GNU textutils on SuSE Linux 8.0. It happens already with "yes|fmt -w 16", and has also been observed with -w 18, -w 20, -w 40 and the default width.
