Details:
If I'm using the option -r with --spider on a website I'm noticing that wget
is creating the directory structure and temporary the files (but i can't tell
if the files were empty or not as they are immediately deleted). --spider is
documented that it doesn't download anything and just check for the existence.
An user would probably not expect that this would create any files.
