I don't really work on xboard anymore, so you should ask
[email protected] problems. I've cc'ed the list on this reply.

I can't tell from your message whether installing or running xboard "fails".
Most likely it is installing fine, but it wants to use fairymax as its chess
engine by default. If you wanted to use some other chess engine, please read
the man page to find out how. If you wanted to do something other than play
against a chess engine, please read the man page to find out how. Or if you
want to play against fairymax, you have to install it too. (I don't have
help for you on that.)
