"yum intall" on Fedora calculates the dependencies and asks you if you want to 
install them also.
Maybe with Ubuntu you have to have to install all of them at once.
Try adding all of the dev packages that it listed to the command line and 
installing again.
You will need those packages and maybe a few more.
