Summary: GSM panel applet keeps on displaying 'Connected to GSM
network' notification
Product: OpenMoko
Version: 2007.2
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: openmoko-panel-gsmgprs
AssignedTo: [email protected]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CC: [email protected]
The panel applet keeps on redisplaying 'Connected to GSM network' when switching
cells - This message only needs to be displayed when connecting to a new
network, or when connecting after being disconnected, not whenever a tower is
switched (which can be very often).
Using phone-kit, you could hook onto the "StatusChanged" signal of the network
object, otherwise you need to add logic to ignore successive
NETREG_REG_(HOME|ROAMING) when only the cell ID has changed.
Openmoko-today2 also now displays the network name (and 'registering...' during
connection), so perhaps this notification should be disabled altogether?

We need to add expedite recipes to OE and find an easy way to include it to the
gta02 image.
This is really important because we need hard performance data for comparison of
the Xglamo graphical operations. This is a must to know what to focus on to
improve performance and understand how the glamo chip behaves.

Ah, this is a problem with either matchbox-keyboard or the keymap for it (more
likely the latter, we experience no problems with it in poky or other contexts),
as it is holding down return instead of just pressing it. Editing bug
description and reassigning.
I didn't experience it as I've not been using matchbox-keyboard.

What keyboard are you using and how to switch to it? If is workaround to this
bug it could be helpful to
know.

I'm using my own hacked up multi-tap input pad: http://chrislord.net/files/moko/
, http://chrislord.net/blog/Software/multitap-pad.enlighten
It conflicts with matchbox-keyboard-inputmethod, so you'll need to alter your
images/force options accordingly. It's a little hacky/buggy as I only knocked it
up in a day or two and haven't gone back to it, but I find it far more useful
than a QWERTY keyboard.

only rarely sent by the network.

Agreed. It's in oe/67b120742df5594a3735d002b5adef97a2e7811c now. Thinking about
it, as long term plan we should rather have both X and gsmd report to syslog --
at least this can be configured to use a circular buffer. Otherwise we are going
to fill memory up sooner or later (since /tmp is a tmpfs).

Marcin, since then we have the new display locker which deals with orientation
as well (since he needs to rotate back while the display is locked).
Could I ask you to rediff your patch against HEAD taking the new display locker
into account?

I think someone should measure whether there is any activity on the gsm modem
chip. It may as well be a kernel problem, but we won't know for sure until
someone starts measuring. Since there are no component placements nor specs
released, FIC Mobility needs to do this.
