More information: It only occurs very sporadic and I have seen it almost always
after having DFU-uploaded something and then booted right without resetting or
replugging.

If X fails to start or crashes it prompts the user with a console login. This is
bad enough since there is no keyboard to login BUT neither the POWER nor AUX
buttons do anything so to recover you must remove the battery.
I can't imagine this would be good for the device, and it's certainly
unintuitive.

Timezones aren't really guaranteed to work if you start copying files from a
different machine - You ought to set the time-zone on the device
(openmoko-worldclock lets you, although this application is very much unfinished
and the functionality ought to be included in a generic settings app).
