I don't think your problem with xserver restart is related to this issue.
I'm assuming you're trying to restart X from the terminal on your Neo.
You should preface that call with nohup.

I tried adding:

to the bottom of GLAMORandRSetConfig(), but with no change in behavior;
looks like they're already called by glamoSetScannoutGeometry() in any
case. (This is what drivers normally do; catch an RandR event and do
input rotation then.)

The Filesystem Hierarchy Standard guarantees that files in /var/tmp are
"Temporary files preserved between system reboots"

On openmoko /var/tmp seems to be on tmpfs so it files in it are not
preserved between system reboots. Please consider following FHS and making
/var/tmp reside on the root filesystem. I am using the following images on
freerunner in case it matters:

I can verify this affects anyone (users) trying to
opkg update
opkg upgrade
or even install pkgs such as openmoko-mediaplayer2
with people of various skills levels just receiving their freerunner, it
has high visibility on the project.
