If your backup battery state is low and you remove all other power, then
the clock will either stop or act erratic in hardware. Can that be the
case here?

I guess so.. but.. Why would the backup battery state be low and is there
a way to check it? The main battery had been there for hours and FR was on
before I had to remove it.
