I found accidently a workaround to this problem. With the latest version of DragonFly, 5.8.x, when a DVD is in the writer, it is detected at boot time. But when the DVD is not in the writer, then the device is completely ignore as if it wasn't there. I upgraded to the 64 bit version of DragonFly, the latest release DragonFly v3.4.3.8.g64f666-RELEASE. DF is not detecting my DVD correctly anymore. It's a SATA DVD from LG. With the previous 3.2 version, the same DVD was detected correctly. It also is detected while booting from the DVD with DragonFly 3.4.
