Documentation doesn't mention that SSL is not in binary dist.

Actually, the document
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_ssl.html
lists "Status: Extension", which is defined as not included 
by default.  Then to find out how to include modules, you should
look at http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/install.html#configure
since this is not something specific to mod_ssl; it is done the
same way that any other apache module is built.
