The behaviour can be stated as follows: Within the _same_ scope, DirectoryIndex index.html DirectoryIndex index.htm is effectively the same as DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm That is the way, iterative directives usually work. Clearing the list entirely may be a considerable feature anyway.
