(hacking mod_rewrite.c to add an appropriate chown() call) After digging a while, it is clear that there are some serious problems with the rewrite log lock that aren't so easy to fix locally. These could result in some misformatting of the rewrite log. Other than the missing chown(), I don't see any reliability problems with the more important lock that controls communication with an external RewriteMap program. Hopefully all of this will be resolved in the next release.
