http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=22989 Apache often fails to start on XP if UPNP is enabled Summary: Apache often fails to start on XP if UPNP is enabled Product: Apache httpd-2.0 Version: 2.0.47 Platform: PC OS/Version: Windows XP Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: Other Component: Platform AssignedTo: [email protected] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Apache 2.0.47 often failed to start properly for me in XP. The Apache2 service and Apache.exe processes would be running but ApacheMonitor would say it's not running and I couldn't access the server. I'd have to stop and then start Apache through ApacheMonitor to get Apache running properly. Clicking on restart wouldn't work like that; I'd need to stop and start. I finally fixed the problem. I made the Apache2 service depend on the universal plug and play services, SSDPSRV and upnphost. I don't know if both are necessary and I don't feel like trying to find out. I've done about 10 reboots and Apache ran properly every time. Before it wouldn't even run properly 1/10 times. To do this fix add SSDPSRV and upnphost lines to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Apache2\DependOnService in the registry. (use regedit or whatever) The only problem now is that ApacheMonitor fails to show up in the system tray. This also happens if I disable the Apache2 service. Before it'd almost always be there. I assume this is yet another stupid UPNP issue. If the UPNP services are enabled on XP various tray icons sometimes dissappear (and I mean disappear, not become hidden). This ApacheMonitor problem is therefore a known and unfixed bug in XP, not an Apache bug, but it would be nice if ApacheMonitor automatically replaced it's tray icon if it found it missing (due to this XP bug or an explorer crash or whatever). Many windows apps do this and I find it very helpful. BTW I strongly recommend disabling or uninstalling universal plug and play unless you're really sure you need it. It doesn't even work right anyways; my internet gateway gets found only half the time. -- Boris --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
