I know I should just stay out of this, but in response to this quote: "without
this, the whole module is pretty much
useful just for static sites with no, or minimal scripting"

I'm amazed, then, that so many people seem to be sucessfully scripting from
directories mapped using UserDir, Alias, RewriteRule, and even (my gosh!)
ScriptAlias. None of these have a "correct" DOCUMENT_ROOT, if by correct you
mean something that has some relation to the location of the script.

As has been pointed out, DOCUMENT_ROOT is not, never was, and never will be a
reliable way of finding the filesystem path to web content.
