Although (or should I write: since) it seems that no one wants do deal with the
problem I would suggest focusing on <a
href="http://www.hexten.net/mod_log_rotate/";><b>mod_log_rotate</b></a>.

Apparently the only thing this module lacks at the moment is such code that
parses "%Y-%m-%d" tokens in the target filename, like rotatelogs(.exe) does.
Currently mod_log_rotate can only produce "name.NNN" formatted filenames, where
NNN are seconds since 1970. On the other hand, it already has the local time
handling coming with newer versions of Apache's rotatelogs.

I've already asked the developer for doing that and he reported he's got sent a
patch concerning this, and will work on it in the near future. If this will be
become true, mod_log_rotate IMHO could be the perfect (hopefully
platform-independent) replacement/alternative for the piping method. I
personnally would appreciate if mod_log_rotate becomes part of Apache then.

However, it probably would be a good idea to encourage Andy (the developer) to
do the outstanding work.
