I have upgraded to httpd-2.2.4, switched to using prefork instead of worker, added the SetEnv configuration options mentioned previously, tried various backend server combinations of KeepAlive etc. Running httpd-2.2.4, prefork on Solaris 10 Sparc (T1000), caching and proxying to httpd-2.2.4 prefork on Solaris 10 AMD64.
