this issue breaks software such as "wordpress" (and probably many other 
frameworks) which might explain why VirtualDocumentRoot is not used very much 
in hosting environments.

I *love* the idea of VirtualDocumentRoot-- it makes configuration tons 
easier.. but if it breaks other software, I have to go back to 
the "traditional" mass virtual hosting directives.

honestly, a new variable (VIRTUAL_DOCUMENT_ROOT) could be added, but then all 
of the wordpress instances deployed on the internet would have to be updated 
to use the new variable.
