Sendmail's breaking of long lines using the backslash character exceeds MTA authority, and introduces new problems; go search the web for confused reports of mysterious appearances of "\" in the middle of web-generated mail.
You should just pipe the output through fmt. However, the real bug here is that you didn't receive clear diagnostic message. I committed a fix which makes the reason behind the failure explicit.
