The laptop I tried to reproduce this on is acpi-based.

also, from sys/dev/acpi/acpi.c, line 1832:

        acpi_record_event(sc, APM_NORMAL_RESUME);

Which is the function in question to provide the events. Are your
userland and kernel in sync? Could you update to a snapshot to be
entirely sure about that?
