I noticed I can work around the "size botch" panic during boot by doing this:

 - start with keyboard enabled
 - type "boot bsd.test" at the ok-prompt
 - unplug keyboard, get some usb errors (from openboot?) and suggestion to
power cycle
 - plug keyboard when system has booted and login appears
 - keyboard works and system doesn't panic
