Hi Everyone,

I confirmed the problem. When multicast packets are sent from the gre0
interface to the em0 interface,
packets are lost. Find in attachment capture file that shows the problem. On
the gre0 interface you can
see packets being sent regularly, but on the em0 interface some packets are
missing.

To verify this, you need to look at the time since packets capture on the gre0
interface are not encrypted
and on the em0 interface they are.

Description:



I am trying to establish a VPN using a GRE tunnel with IPSEC to







pass OSPF routing information between 2 remote offices, running OpenBSD 4.9

at both end.



Everything was set-up to my best knowledge and the I notice that

the routing information was appearing and disappearing.








I started by running the command "ospfctl show neighbor" every

second to see the routing neighbor status.



This is were I discovered that the ospf "Dead timer" would time out

the ospf neighbor and that after the ospf neighbor would re-initialize







itself fully.



This cycle would repeat itself continuously without stopping.

Each time this happend the routing table are modify creating total

routing chaos !!!



I tried a different ospf deamon (quagga) and got the exact same result.







I tried other encapsulation methods (openvpn and openssh) and got

the same result.



Testing more the GRE Tunnel/IPSEC solution, I got the idea to

remove the encryption from the equation, keeping just the GRE







tunnel to pass the OSPF.



With this set up the traffic is not encrypted, but just the OSPF is

encasulated in the GRE tunnel. EVERYTHING WORK...

OSPF is not timing out, all the OSPF traffic is passing good.








Did more testing .... when only the GRE tunnel is up, no OSPF

running, I can ping the other end of the tunnel with a ping of a

very long length. I tried up to 9000 bytes and it was succesfull all the
time.










When the GRE tunnel is up and IPSEC is running, no OSPF running,

the ping are not working so good.  You will never get the same result.

Look at the following 2 series of ping ...

Nothing was changed in the configuration between those 2 ping test.







They were only a few second apart.

Any idea what can cause this mess ???



Is there a maximum size of a ping through the IPSECT tunnel ???

I tought that the ping would be segmented ???



I also notice that the ifconfig command does not display the MTU of







the enc0 interface. Is this normal ?



You can repeat those problem easily using VM.

I repeated those problems using 3 OpenBSD 4.9 VMs on Virtual Box.

The 3 VMs are the 2 remote office and a router simulating the Internet.







I am redeay to provide you with those VMs.



If you know of exact release of OpenBSD and OSPFD that have been fully

tested and that work for sure with GRE and IPSEC, please inform me.

I would like to try them and install them between my 2 remote offices.
