Good day to all,
I'm living with a repeatable problem; which seems bound to a specific
hardware setup.
I can reproduce it (well, reproduce, wait for it?) on any other machine
with the same motherboard.
System at fault is the Intel S3000AH series boards, with the 2 onboard
NICs activated. I'm trying to determine which one by running some tests
on 2 hosts with the same problem and deactivating one different NIC on
each host.
The motherboard sports 2 NICs using 2 different chips and PCI pathways.
ie; one Intel PRO/1000MT (82541GI), and one Intel PRO/1000MT (82573E)
It looks, so far as I can tell, that the problem NIC is the 82573E
Oh yes, I need to mention this is consistent with different OpenBSD
versions starting at 4.4, up till 4.9.
So in a strike of genius I figured I could just deactivate that one NIC
and run my systems without it.
But, being who I am, I figured I should try to document the bug before I
resort to the draconian measures. :p
So... hope this helps someone, somewhere.
Here's a dmesg, ps and trace dump from DDB on one of the hosts. Follows
beneath the dumps for the second host.

This box is not really being used, more of a puppet agent testbed.
But it crashes very often (every 2 to 3 days), and there's CARP
broadcast advertisement traffic on it's only active NIC, when I'm not
playing on it. (not from this host)
Note that it never crashed on me while I was playing with it (running my
puppet tests). I'll login in the morning to find it crashed usually.
But I do monitor it through Nagios (monitoring a website, ssh and
pings), so it receives traffic regularily.
Dumps for the second host,
This one is a firewall with 6 NICs. Crashes are rarer (it's not being
used actually, because its been causing problems with our CARP setup
somehow. It would freeze up or cause the other host to freeze.)
BUT, the misbehaving NIC sits on a pretty quiet network right now (no
CARP advertisement going there and no Nagios monitoring on the affected
NIC, there's only switched SSH connections on this network). But the
same NIC was responsible in my past efforts for the pfsync traffic,
hopefully I've put the finger on the problem and by deactivating this
particular NIC I can put my firewalls back on the redundant path.
Hourray for that ! :)
