Booting the correct bsd.rd (i.e. the one from the snapshot you are trying to upgrade to) from another device does seem to be your best bet. The key point is to always use the bsd.rd from the snapshot you are trying to install/upgrade. Otherwise you can hurt yourself in various ways. ....
