Yes maybe your patch don't fixed the cause or the origin of the bug. But without the patch I experienced a lot of crashes or unwanted exits and after patching it runs ok for me. I tested it for two weeks now and even under heavy load while rebuilding openbsd I could send mails and smtpd didn't abort for this two weeks now and restarts just fine.
