I found using wifi dongle connected to the computer via a usb cable functions
better than directly plugged into the usb port. Especially on an old desktop
computer where the excessive use of metal in the chassis interferes with
wireless-g (unsupported wireless-n has better error corrections for flaky
signals).

If the heat is (at least partially) coming from the motherboard/usb interface
then the extension cord will allow the heat to dissipate.

Worth a try I think.

Brett.
