Running in vmware, when I run "xrandr --dpi 96" it prints an error:

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for default output

And doesn't appear to change the DPI setting. (I test dpi by running
xterm -fa "Courier New" and observing if the font changes size.) I
don't understand what the gamma has to do with dpi.

On a different laptop with inteldrm, xrandr --dpi 96 has the desired
effect. No error, xterm changes font size compared with dpi 72.
