Me: John Repici
Total BSD noob, mostly learning, eventually making
a box for testing web apps, off-world.
Problem: Xorg stopped working on update from 5.5 -> 5.6 release
Hello,
. . . . . . .
Machine:
Old Dell Inspiron 2500 (laptop) with 0.5 gig installed RAM and a new
disk drive (see dmesg output below).
. . . . . . .
Problem and Cause
The problem(above) seems to be caused by the need for agp(4) for my
particular video controller. I've spent quite a bit of time tracking it
down, but as a complete newbie, I'm not 100% confident in this. The log
file, Xorg.0.log(below) has this line:
[ 106.407] (EE) intel(0): AGP GART support is not available. Make
sure your kernel has
agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel module is loaded.
Your changelog 5.5->5.6 (http://www.openbsd.org/plus56.html) says that
you have removed the userland interface to agp(4).
. . . . . . .
The Point May Be Moot
That said, your changelog 5.6->current
(http://www.openbsd.org/plus.html) says that a fix (to an unrelated
problem) has been made to agp(4). When I read that it seemed hopeful.
Does this mean agp will be back in the next release? Or is this just
wishful thinking on my part?
Most of my use of Xorg, prior to the upgrade, has been purely for
learning about it, and learning how to configure fvwm to look and act
how I want. It has actually been a huge distraction, but, a lot of fun
as well.
There is considerable utility in the X Window system too (multiple wide
terminals, alt-tabbing between windows, cut-paste, etc.), but I have
found that the same utility is also available by starting multiple PuTTY
windows on MS-Windows based machines.
Even the title-bar-changing scripts I wrote for fvwm work on the PuTTY
windows running in MS-Windows.
So, if agp(4) will be put back in the next release, I will wait for that.
If not, I will probably drop back to 5.5 (reinstall it while there's
still nothing important running on the existing box).
. . . . . . .
Attempted Workarounds?
I tried a lot of weird stuff in xorg.conf.d/. Even tried vesa, but got
video-chaos, then a black screen (probably some rookie mistake). I used
Alt-Ctl-F# to move to a different virtual terminal, which essentially
shuts down Xorg on whatever terminal it's running.
As stated, if agp(4) is returning in the next release, I can happily
wait. If not, I will simply drop back to 5.5. Or, if you've got a
better idea. . . :)
. . . . . . .
dmesg, and Xorg.0.logoutput
These two files are cut and pasted in the sections at the end of this
e-mail.
. . . . . . .
Thank You!
And . . . sorry, if I've got this totally wrong.
-John
