On the DEC VT220 and good emulations (e.g. xterm), a variety of
Control-<key> combinations produce somewhat nonobvious control
codes.  For instance, Ctrl-3 is the same as Ctrl-[, i.e. ESC, and
much more convenient to reach on typical PC keyboards than the
actual Esc key.
