It does cause problems if it's at a high enough rate (sbcl builds are a good one) and you have a "low" speed serial console - kernel printfs lock the kernel for an appreciable time. Same reason why you should think twice before using "pfctl -x debug" on a busy firewall (especially one doing nat) with serial console.
