If possible, try to run gdb to get a backtrace and post the
backtrace. It will be more efficient.
Ok, will follow the steps mentioned by Stewart,  and send you the backtrace, tomorow.
Also, are you forcing X to use the intel driver via an xorg.conf file?

mostly work.  i am even able to watch video/youtube all day long but not run text editor (and even then only some text editor :-)) vim/gvim, emacs - work most of the time, but not gedit.

and even then, even if gedit not work, why it brings the whole X.org down? that's what I find strange in the first place.
