If you can ssh into the machine when that happens a useful piece of informations would be the output of: # ps -Sx -Owchan similarly the output of "ps -S" would show where current threads are blocking. Another interesting piece of information would be the output of 'dmesg' at that given moment. The kernel might have printed some valuable informations when something wrong happens. Maybe /var/log/Xorg.0.log would also contain valuable informations.
