Synopsis: A USB WiFi stick sometimes causes kernel panics
Category: kernel
Environment:
System : OpenBSD 6.8
Details : OpenBSD 6.8 (GENERIC.MP) #4: Mon Jan 11 10:35:56 MST 2021
[email protected]:/usr/src/sys/arch/amd64/compile/GENERIC.MP
Architecture: OpenBSD.amd64
Machine : amd64
Description:
(Kernel panic debugging output was sent as a separate email)
The jl.inet Microuter USB travel router / WiFi adapter / etc sometimes works,
but sometimes doesn't.
When it doesn't, it produces USB errors (that show up in dmesg, which I can't
reproduce at the moment) and eventually causes kernel panics if I keep trying
to get it to work with 'netstart'.
The chipset talking to the machine is a Realtek USB networking chipset, so it
shows up as ure0.
How-To-Repeat:
1. buy USB150 Microuter off Aliexpress
2. insert into machine running 6.8 (release)
3. If it works, great
4. If not, keep trying
# sh /etc/netstart ure0
5. It will say it either has no link or no lease
6. Keep trying until the kernel panics (and drops to ddb) or the machine locks
up completely (with no option except a forced reboot)
Fix:
Reboot the machine, and try again
