Switching channels might be, I doubt moving out of range since I do all
work from the same desk all day and almost never carry the laptops
around.

FWIW I also see the same error on a Thinkpad X250 with an iwm 7256.  I
can even maneuver the system into a state where I cannot recover the
WiFi. I ran "doas ifconfig iwm0 mode 11a" since my AP supports 11a and I
wanted to give it a try.  That triggered the firmware error basically
in a loop.  A reboot was the only method to get the Wifi working again.
