Perhaps you might notice something if you carefully watch the screem
when sysupgrade has rebooted into the install/upgrade kernel.

There's no general problem with sysupgrade but if you have a complex
disk layout maybe it can't figure out what to do.

When you upgrade from the usb image, do you need to use non-default
answers to any of the questions?
