I have to note here that I run wsconsctl in a terminal in X. I.e. I

up my favorite terminal emulator, and just type doas wsconsctl ...

So, it happens if you change brightness outside of X11?
No. I double checked: when I switch to another VT that is not running
xenocara, changing the brightness via wsconsctl is instantaneous. It
only seems to happen inside of an X session.
