Hello OpenBSD team,
Please find below a detailed report of a reproducible PCI enumeration
panic on my ROCKPro64 running OpenBSD.
Please let me know if you need additional information or diagnostic tests.
I would be happy to test patches and help investigate and resolve the
issue.
I have a reproducible early boot panic on a PINE64 ROCKPro64 v2.1
(RK3399, 4 GB) with a four-port Intel I350 installed. PCI ID is
8086:1521 rev 01; the present functions are 01:00.0 through 01:00.3.
The card is sold as a NICGIGA 4 Port 1G PCIe Ethernet Adapter with
an Intel I350 controller and four 1GbE RJ45 ports. This is the
supplied retail description; I have not recorded an exact part number.
The installed kernel is OpenBSD 7.9 GENERIC.MP #16, built
Mon Sep 28 02:46:43 MDT 2026. U-Boot is 2021.10, built
Apr 27 2026 20:47:53 -0600; BOOTAA64 is version 1.24.
syspatch -l lists 34 installed patches, 001_xserver through
034_wsdisplay; the complete list is included below. The power-supply
rating and slot/riser arrangement have not been confirmed.
Booting sd0a:/bsd without debugger changes repeatedly panics just
after pci1 attaches, before any Intel em interface attaches:
panic: uvm_fault failed: ffffff8000cebea8 esr 96000210
far ffffff805bd7b00c
The trace passes through generic_space_read_4, pci_probe_device,
pci_enumerate_bus, pciattach, ppbattach and rkpcie_attach.
I include the complete traceback and ps output below.
From the original saved exception frame, not the registers at the
panic's db_enter breakpoint:
fault instruction: generic_space_read_4+0x18: ldr w0, [x2,x1]
x1 = 0xffffff805bc77000
x2 = 0x10400c
x21 = 0x104000
The rkpcie tag encoding decodes this as bus 1, device 0, function 4,
register 0x0c. x1 + x2 equals FAR exactly. ESR has read direction
and synchronous external-abort fault status 0x10.
As a diagnostic, I booted sd0a:/bsd -d and changed two instructions
in RAM after verifying their disassembly:
pci_enumerate_bus+0xf8: mov w28,#8 -> mov w28,#4
0x5280011c -> 0x5280009c
pci_enumerate_bus+0x19c: mov w24,#8 -> mov w24,#4
0x52800118 -> 0x52800098
After continue, em0 through em3 all attached with MSI and the system
reached multiuser login. Both sites were changed together, so I
have not established whether both changes are necessary. This cap
is global and temporary, not proposed as a general PCI fix.
Disabling rkpcie in UKC also permits boot, without the NIC.
A temporary max-link-speed=<1> FDT test still panics. Armbian/Linux
enumerates all four functions with igb, and each physical port
established 1000 Mb/s full-duplex link when tested individually.
After the RAM changes, OpenBSD em0 establishes 1000baseT full-duplex
link and exchanges packets with a Mac on the same switch. I assigned
169.254.251.73/16 to em0 and pinged the Mac at 169.254.251.72 with
that source address. The route selected em0; all 5 probes received
replies, with zero loss and average RTT 0.799 ms. This is a short
functional test, not a sustained-load test of all four ports.
pcidump reports 5.0 GT/s x2 in this OpenBSD boot, versus 2.5 GT/s x2
in the earlier Linux log. Negotiated speed in the failing FDT
speed-limit experiment was not captured.
A signed 8.0-current RAMDISK #114, built Sat Oct 10 04:49:07 MDT
2026, also panics after pci1 attaches, with ESR 0x96000210.
I tested it by booting a separate bsd.rd; I did not upgrade the
installed system. The precise function was decoded on 7.9 only.
There is a possibly related 2020 report, with a two-port I350:
https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg15470.html
Could you advise which controller state or narrow diagnostic patch
would help determine why this absent-function config read aborts?
I can test a platform-specific change and provide serial captures.
=== Earlier unmodified 7.9 crash: complete traceback and ps ===
Addresses differ from the subsequently decoded crash. This is a
separate reproduction with the same kernel build.
