It seems like there is a gap in the RTEMS interrupt API if there is a need to 
pull the tm27 support here. A quick look suggests this is to get easy access to 
a secondary timer on BSPs that have one, where the fallback is to use a 
software interrupt. Most likely the correct solution would be to provide an 
abstraction layer for the interrupt API to expose secondary timers. @sebhub is 
this reasoning correct? I haven't dug deeply enough in the code to be certain.
