Having just done this recently, I’d suggest going through the archives and finding Igor’s posts on the subject, and work from there. Make sure you have the latest version of FreeType, because it sounds like yours may be the wrong version. Also, when building using the b17 (most recent) drop, build with “OPENJDK=true” on the command line.
