Hi Dave, your solution works of course. But the problem is that the mails in the archives are archived month-wise. If you have a discussion thread which spans multiple month, you can't see the whole thread in the thread view - you can only see the part which belongs to one month. Linking to such a discussion thread is impractical (in general you can only link to all threads in a month, not to a single thread).
Services like nabble or gmane have much nicer UI for reading mail threads - and it's easier to link to such a thread. Compare for example the gmane link for the discussion thread "Announcement: Visualization tool for client compiler": http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.openjdk.hotspot.compiler.devel/31 with the two links you need to cover the same discussion thread in the archives: http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/hotspot-compiler-dev/2007-September/thread.html http://mail.openjdk.java.net/pipermail/hotspot-compiler-dev/2007-October/thread.html As I mentioned, you can not link to a single thread in the archives, just to a monthly thread view.
