Yes, for files being copied with the COPY directive to SetupJavaCompilation (which is what you describe), it will automatically pick the most specific file found. The order is defined by the order the src root directories are defined. Basically gensrc>os>ostype>shared (with closed variants interleaved between them).

I would like to extend this functionality to java source files at some point, but that has not been done yet as it will be a bit more complicated to implement.

Also note that the COPY directive can work with just file suffixes so if you want all .gif files to be copied, you only need to add .gif and not list all the files explicitly.
