- Gradle - Maven and its derivatives are a good option too (see this article http://www.drdobbs.com/jvm/why-build-your-java-projects-with-gradle/240168608 ) - https://buildr.apache.org/ - https://facebook.github.io/buck/ - ultra fast ;) You might not go for this immediately, but ideas from here are good for the present and future of Java - https://typesafe.com/blog/zinc-and-incremental-compilation Here's a nice comparison - https://www.symphonious.net/2010/01/11/comparing-build-systems/ I find XML hard to read compared to JSON or YAML - especially when your XML file grows into a big huge monolith.
